In Incubation

VARSHA RAIN GUN

The Varsha Rain Gun was innovated by Sri Anna Saheb, a 70-year old sugarcane farmer of Sadalga village in Belgaum district of Karnataka. The Rain Gun offers attractive savings of 40-50 per cent in water used for irrigation. Given the nature of the water crisis prevailing in the country, this is the single most important feature of the rain gun technology. Additionally, farmers realize savings in irrigation time, power consumed for irrigation, and labor needed for managing irrigation. 
Attractive as these savings are, many other benefits add to the technology's merit. Irrigation with the rain gun helps fix atmospheric nitrogen, supports trash mulching and preserves soil health. All this leads to more efficient, profitable and sustainable agriculture. In recognition of its value, the raingun was awarded by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF). RIN provided a range of services to incubate the rain gun. The efforts culminated in the facilitation of a technology transfer agreement between Anna Saheb and Servals Automation Pvt. Ltd., a Chennai-based company that makes and markets the Venus kerosene stove burner. Significantly, the rain gun is also part of the portfolio that attracted the first ever-micro venture investment in India.

SOLAR WATER HARVESTER

 

 

Conceived by Sri Deepak Rao of Chennai, the solar water harvester will use solar energy to convert salt water to drinking water. This innovation attempts to use multiple effect solar distillation to convert brackish water into pure drinking water. The technology is in development stage. RIN raised a grant worth Rs. 1.9 lakh from the Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. With this support, RIN mentored the innovator in the process of prototyping and building the prototype.

JS MILKER (Manual Milking Device)

The JS Milker is a manual milking device that has the potential to play a pivotal role in contributing to the rural income. It is manufactured and marketed by J Support Industries, a Kerala-based company headed by Mr. Joy John. The JS Milker is a simple vacuum driven device, which can be used to effortlessly draw milk from cows. This portable machine has a vacuum handle, which is used to create the necessary suction power to draw milk out of the udder in the most hygienic and easy manner. The device is also fitted with a vacuum meter to monitor vacuum built. This helps in preventing any damage to the milk nodes of the cows and makes the whole process of milking absolutely simple and safe for the cattle.

RIN has provided market development services in Tamilnadu. It is planned to tap the Gujarat market as well. In the course of providing these services, RIN has handheld the sales personnel. Also, RIN has supported product refinement undertaken in response to specific market feedback.

        

INSECT TRAP

Stored grains are prone to several pest infestations some carried over from the field, some air-borne. Dr S Mohan of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed a simple device called 'Insect Trap'. The trap can be inserted in containers, bags of stored cereals and pulses and left for 10 days for best results. Insects have a tendency to move towards air. Hence the wandering insects enter into the perforations in the gadget and get caught in the trapping tube at the bottom. The trapping tube can be unscrewed and the insects can be destroyed.

The trap is environment friendly as it does not need any chemicals for stored grains, no battery or electricity required, no side effects and absolutely no maintenance required. The technology has won awards at both the State and the Central level. The technology has been licensed to KSNM Marketing, Coimbatore for manufacturing and marketing throughout India. Mr. C V Madeswaran is the Managing Director of KSNM Marketing.

RIN is adding value to the enterprise by developing channel to promote insect trap at the retail and institutional level.

        

VARUN TILLER

Varun Tiller is made and marketed by Trident Dynamics, a Coimbatore-based company. The reduced width of the tiller makes it compatible for weeding operations in any standing crop where close spacing is the norm. The tiller can be used in sugarcane and cotton fields for weeding operations, even 3 months after the crop is sown. In addition, the tiller is well balanced, lightweight and cost-effective compared to other tillers in the market. The operating costs incurred are half when compared 
to manual tilling and less than costs incurred in using other power tillers. The company offers a number of attachments for the tiller.

RIN will provide market research services, undertake a study on subsidies that the company can tap to market the product to farmers and follow-up on product testing and certification. 

COCONUT DEHUSKER

Mr. Karrupaiah, of Process Ekuipment, Coimbatore, has developed the coconut-dehusking machine. The machine can dehusk 500-coconuts/ hour of size of dia 120 mm to 250 mm. The machine requires 3 semi-skilled people to operate and achieve the above efficiency. The machine operates on a 1.5 HP single-phase motor, weighs 175 kg and is provided with forward and reverse switch. The machine has set of rollers supported with anti-friction non-corrosive bearings, strippers and is coated to prevent rusting. The dehusked coconut will fall on the left side and the husk on the right side of the operator. The machine's design has been registered with the Patent Office, Chennai.

RIN will offer services for Technology Transfer and convert prospects into customers for Coconut Dehuking machine.

VENUS BURNER

The Venus burner was developed by Sri V. Thiagarajan, a highly experienced engineer from Chennai. It is a novel energy-efficient burner for kerosene stoves and features an improved design. Tested and appreciated by the Central Scientific 
Instruments Organisation (CSIO) and Anna University, the Venus burner offers numerous benefits. It delivers 37% savings in kerosene consumption, lasts longer, is safer to use, makes less noise and is easy to maintain. With so many benefits to 
offer, the Venus burner has caught the imagination of the manufacturers of kerosene stoves and burners.

RIN provided market research, market development and marketing services to the Venus burner.

BIO ASTHIRA

Bio Asthira is one of the products made by Sri K M Chellamuthu, an agri labourer of Oonjalur village in Erode district, Tamilnadu. Of the various products made, the herbal pesticide is an innovation recognized and awarded by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF). It enjoys a good reputation in and around Erode. Bio Asthira gives paddy and turmeric farmers a less expensive, fully natural, eco-friendly solution to their pest management problems. What is more, the herbal pesticide also delivers increases in yield. In sum, it is an excellent formulation for natural farming.

As with the rain gun, RIN provided a range of services including product testing, market research, market development, marketing and business planning. The efforts concluded with the facilitation of a marketing arrangement between K M Chellamuthu and JS Traders, a Battalagundu-based company promoted by people with expertise and rich experience in marketing agro chemicals.

SIPHON BANANA STEM INJECTOR

The Stem Injector was developed by Sri Manoharan of Battalagundu, a lathe owner of Tamil Nadu. It is similar to a syringe and injects pesticides into the pseudo-stem of the diseased banana, thus providing assured relief from stem borer, wilt and weevil attack. It helps to manage indiscriminate pesticide application in banana leading to a 20% cost saving. The injector incorporates a feature that allows varying dosages to be applied, depending on the age of the banana. Women too can easily 
operate the injector that is built to last. Labor involved in applying the pesticide does not suffer from exposure to pesticide, a major health hazard where pesticide spraying is the norm.

RIN provided product development, market research, marketing, market development, working capital and business planning support to the innovator. These services helped in vitalizing the innovation and culminated in a marketing agreement between Manoharan and JS Traders.

VALLALAR HAIR OIL

Sri Palanivelu, a siddha vaidya of Arasangudi in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, developed this herbal hair oil that prevents premature graying, controls split ends and keeps the scalp cool. In addition to the hair oil, Sri Palanivelu makes a variety of formulations and medicines for common ailments.

RIN evolved an appropriate business model for the hair oil. At the same time, provision of various business development services (including business planning, packaging improvements and marketing) yielded encouraging results.

GROWMAX (AQUA) / RESPVENT (POULTRY)

VIP Bio Products is a company based in Madurai, Tamilnadu. It deals with two different products, one developed for poultry and the other, for the aqua sector. Both innovations have been developed by Dr. Vasanthi Palaniappan, a PhD holder in animal sciences. The products are handled by VIP Bio Enterprise, run by Sri S. Palaniappan.

Growmax Aqua Feed Supplement is a unique and synergistic blend of herbs. The blend acts as an immunomodulator and natural performance enhancer, thereby realizing the growth potential. It is used for shrimp farming and helps increase the survival rate, achieve decreased DOC, reduces vibrio numbers and improves FCR.

Respvent Herbal Poultry Feed Supplement helps to prevent occurrence of respiratory tract related disorders, and thus contributes to weight gain, low mortality, decreased FCR in chicken. It is highly cost effective.

RIN undertook market research studies and developed a marketing strategy for VIP Bio-Products. In addition, RIN extended product testing, business planning services and market development support to increase awareness.

DEEPASAKTHI POOJA OIL

Deepasakthi Pooja Oil is made by K P Castor Oil Works, a company that has been in existence for more than 50 years and is a market leader in branded castor oil in Coimbatore market. Deepasakthi oil is made by blending 5 different oils in the ratio 
prescribed in Indian shastras (texts). 

The oil produces a bright flame. Remarkably, it produces almost no soot. In addition, the fumes produced repel disease-producing bacteria and the fragrance gives divine peace to the mind and body. The company also deals in other oils like Neem, Mahua and Rose Water. All the products are available across all retail stores in Coimbatore.

RIN undertook market research and identified strategies aimed at developing markets and increasing sales. RIN also handholds the company in the organization of promotional activities, such as participation in local fairs and exhibitions.

TREADLE CONVERSION KIT

Motek India located at Bhilai in Chattisgarh, is a firm owned by Mr.Satish Deb. In 1999 Satish developed a kit which held considerable promise for the treadle (letter) presses of the country, estimated to number around 1.50 lakhs. The innovation helps the treadle press make use of DTP output in place of the traditional letter types, thus substantially improving the print quality. Priced very attractively, the product also lends versatility to the treadle presses with the facility of printing on polythene material and hardboard sheets.

RIN is enabling Motek India to commercialise this innovation through appropriate technology and marketing tie-ups.
