In serving its mission, RIN's work is characterized by a number of distinctive features
RIN takes technologies out
While other organizations take technologies and products into rural areas, RIN differs in taking technologies out from rural areas. RIN champions this "technology outwards" approach because it believes innovators innovate out of local need, and in many cases the same needs exist in other rural areas.
RIN adheres to commercial discipline
In taking rural innovations to the market, RIN adheres to an intense commercial approach that stands out for the following reasons.
- RIN focuses only on innovations that can meet an existing market need, be revenue generating and self-sustaining
- RIN believes a strong commercial orientation is critical to enable rural micro-enterprises. While other organizations addressing rural growth appear less focused on this aspect, RIN seeks a deep-seated commercial orientation in employees, network resources and business partners.
RIN offers comprehensive services
RIN provides comprehensive business services to help enable micro-enterprises and believes it is the only organization of its kind addressing the full range of issues that rural micro enterprises face - from manufacturing to marketing to selling to financing.
RIN works with venture capital investors
Raising commercial finance is one of the most critical activities in establishing a successful micro-enterprise. RIN has, from inception, focused on forging ties with venture capital (VC) firms that operate with rigorous commercial discipline. RIN has signed a MoU with Aavishkaar India Micro-Venture Capital Fund (AIMVCF). Aavishkaar, under the MoU, considers investment in RIN-enabled, innovation-based micro enterprises. Already, the partnership has paid off, following an Aavishkaar VC investment in M/s Servals Automation Ltd., the manufacturer of the rain gun and burner innovations. RIN hopes to build on its relationship with AIMVCF and develop ties with other likeminded firms.
